Neuschwanstein Castle and the Königssee lake are both within 90–120 minutes of Munich by public transport or car. Combining them in one day is possible but rushed — visiting one properly is better than two too quickly.
Neuschwanstein: Getting There
From Munich Hauptbahnhof, take the regional train (RE) to Füssen — 2 hours, runs hourly, ~€30 return with a Bayern-Ticket (worth it if two or more people are traveling). From Füssen station, bus 78 runs to Hohenschwangau village at the foot of the castle (15 minutes, €3). From the village, it is a 30–40 minute uphill walk to the castle itself, or a horse-drawn carriage ride (€7 up, €4 down) if you want to spare your legs.
Buying Castle Tickets
Tickets must be booked online at ticket-center-hohenschwangau.de — walk-up availability is very limited in summer and essentially zero on weekends. Book at least 2–3 weeks in advance for a summer visit. The timed-entry ticket includes a guided tour (30 minutes). Adult admission: €15.
The interior tour itself is brief. The view from the Marienbrücke (Mary's Bridge) — a footbridge 90 meters above the Pöllat Gorge — is the photograph most people come for. The bridge is a 15-minute walk past the castle. It closes in winter (November–April) when icy conditions make it dangerous.
Königssee: Getting There
From Munich Hauptbahnhof, take the train to Berchtesgaden (2 hours, change at Freilassing). From Berchtesgaden station, bus 841 runs to Königssee (10 minutes). The lake is best experienced by the electric boat tours run by the Bayerische Seenschifffahrt — no engine noise, the boatman demonstrates the famous echo halfway across the lake. Round trip to St. Bartholomä chapel: €20, 35 minutes each way.
If You Have to Choose One
Neuschwanstein is more iconic; Königssee is more beautiful and less crowded. In July and August, Neuschwanstein is very busy — the line for horses up the hill and the flow of tourists through the tour can feel industrial. The Königssee is quieter, more natural, and the boat journey is genuinely calming. Both are worth doing separately on future trips.
