German student discounts add up to real money. If you know where to look and carry your Studentenausweis (student ID card), you can significantly reduce costs on transportation, culture, food, software, and entertainment.
Transportation
Semesterticket: Your most valuable discount. Most German universities include a Semesterticket in the Semesterbeitrag you pay at enrollment — €150-350 per semester for unlimited public transportation within a city or regional zone. Check exactly what your ticket covers: some include only the city, others cover the entire state. At TU Munich and LMU, the Semesterticket covers all MVV (Munich transport network) zones.
Deutschlandticket: The €49/month nationwide transport ticket is not automatically included in most Semestertickets, but several universities negotiate a reduced student rate (~€29/month). Check whether your university has a student Deutschlandticket add-on.
Deutsche Bahn: Students with a BahnCard 25 (25% off all DB tickets) save on intercity travel. The BahnCard 25 second class costs €58.90/year at the under-27 student rate.
Culture and Entertainment
Museums: Most German state and city museums offer free or heavily discounted entry for students. The national museums in Berlin (Pergamonmuseum, Altes Museum, Gemäldegalerie, etc.) charge around €6 for students versus €15-20 for adults. Always ask for Studentenpreis — it’s not always displayed.
Theater and concerts: German theaters and classical music venues (Bayerische Staatsoper, Berliner Philharmoniker, Oper Frankfurt, etc.) sell student standby tickets (Restkarten) at heavily reduced prices, often €5-15. These go on sale 1-2 hours before the performance. App-based: the Kulturticket München app and similar city-specific apps list last-minute availability.
Cinema: Most German cinemas offer student pricing on weekdays, typically €7-9 versus €13-16 regular.
Food
Mensa: The university cafeteria (Mensa) serves subsidized meals to students. A full hot meal typically costs €2-4 with a student card. Mensa menus and prices are posted on university websites and usually on an app. Quality varies significantly between universities and cities.
Software and Digital Services
Adobe Creative Cloud: ~50% discount for students. Microsoft 365: Often free through university IT departments. JetBrains IDEs: Free for students with academic email. Spotify and Apple Music: Student rates, typically €5.99/month in Germany.
Healthcare
Dental: Public health insurance (Krankenkasse) covers twice-yearly dental checkups. Student health insurance at the reduced rate also covers GP visits, prescriptions, and hospital stays with no copayment beyond the Krankenkasse Zuzahlung cap.
