Open Science and AI: How AI Tools Are Enabling More Transparent Research

Open science — open access, open data, open methods, preregistration — has moved from fringe advocacy to mainstream expectation in most fields over the past decade. AI tools are accelerating this transition by making the mechanics of open science cheaper and easier.

Preregistration Made Easier

Preregistration (registering your research questions and analysis plan before collecting data) prevents researcher degrees of freedom and publication bias. The barrier was always time and effort — writing a complete analysis plan before you have data requires careful thinking. AI can help draft preregistrations: describe your study design, research questions, and planned analyses to Claude and ask it to help draft a preregistration in OSF format. The result is a starting point you refine, not a finished preregistration — but removing the blank page barrier increases preregistration rates.

Code and Data Documentation

Making code and data reproducible requires documentation that researchers rarely have time to write carefully. AI dramatically lowers the cost of documentation: paste your analysis code and ask Claude to write a README explaining what each script does, what inputs are required, and how to reproduce the analysis. For datasets, ask for a data dictionary describing each variable. Good documentation makes data reuse possible; AI makes writing good documentation fast.

Open Access Navigation

Navigating open access options for a specific journal is unnecessarily complex — transformative agreements, APCs, green open access options, embargo periods. Ask Claude: “I want to publish in [journal]. What are my open access options, and which is free to me if my institution is a DFG-funded German university?” This cuts through the publisher policy complexity quickly, though you should verify the specific current terms with your library.

ORCID and Research Infrastructure

ORCID (orcid.org) provides persistent researcher identifiers that link your work across institutions and name variations. Set up an ORCID profile if you haven’t — it’s free and increasingly required by funders and publishers. AI can help you draft a strong ORCID biography and publication list. Use it also to understand DORA (Declaration on Research Assessment), which is relevant to how German funders evaluate researcher contributions beyond impact factor.
