DB Delays and Your Passenger Rights: How to Actually Get Compensation

Deutsche Bahn (DB) is punctual about 75–80% of the time. The other 20–25% produces delays ranging from 10 minutes to full cancellations. German passenger rights law gives you specific compensation rights — but only if you know how to claim them.

The Fahrgastrechte Rules

EU Regulation 1371/2007 and German railway law (EVO) set the framework. For any journey with a delay at your destination of 60 minutes or more, you’re entitled to 25% of the ticket price back. For 120 minutes or more: 50% back. These rules apply to point-to-point tickets (not monthly/annual subscriptions like the Deutschlandticket).

How to Claim

Claim online at bahn.de (go to “Fahrgastrechte” in the footer) or at any DB service center. You’ll need the journey details (departure/arrival, date) and ticket. The claim must be submitted within 12 months of the journey date. DB processes most claims within 2–4 weeks, paying out by bank transfer or as a new ticket voucher.

Verpasste Verbindung (Missed Connection)

If a DB delay causes you to miss a connecting train (also DB or a partner train), DB bears responsibility for the full delay at your final destination. Don’t book a new connecting ticket yourself — go to the service desk at the connecting station. They’ll reroute you for free or book you a taxi if the next train is more than an hour away. Keep your original ticket valid.

Cancellations

If your train is cancelled and you decide not to travel, you’re entitled to a full refund — even on non-refundable Sparpreis tickets. If you continue with a delayed route, apply the 60/120-minute compensation rules.

Practical Tips

Download the DB Navigator app and enable push notifications. When delays are announced, the app suggests alternative routes in real time. For ICE trains, the app also shows real-time seat availability for alternative trains. Keep receipts for any extra costs incurred due to delays (taxi, hotel if stranded overnight) — these can be claimed back in egregious cases (2+ hour delays causing overnight stays).
