Getting a German Driver’s License: Theory Exam, Driving Lessons, Costs, and Chinese License Conversion
Germany’s driving license (Führerschein) is expensive (typically €2,500–4,500, with significant school-to-school variation) and demanding. The logic behind this: sections of the German Autobahn have no speed limit; road conditions are complex. A high-standard license corresponds to high safety standards.
Theory Exam (Theorieprüfung)
The theory exam is administered by TÜV or DEKRA (regional variations). The question bank contains approximately 1,000 multiple-choice questions covering traffic law, right-of-way rules, traffic signs, hazard perception, and first aid. The exam consists of 30 questions (some involving video scenarios); passing requires accumulating fewer than 10 error points (different questions carry different point weights).
Study resources: officially recognized apps include Fahrschule.de, iFahrschule, and the ADAC driving school app — all offering full question bank simulation. Practice until your error rate falls below 2% before attempting the exam. Chinese-language study materials are limited; some apps offer multilingual interfaces.
Practical Driving Lessons (Fahrstunden)
German regulations mandate minimum lesson counts for specific scenarios. Mandatory special drives (Sonderfahrten): Autobahn driving (minimum 4 lessons), night driving (minimum 3 lessons), rural road driving (minimum 5 lessons). These are prerequisites for taking the practical exam. No examiner can be scheduled without the driving instructor’s written recommendation.
Prices and quality vary significantly between driving schools. Compare per-lesson costs and check Google ratings and word-of-mouth before signing up.
Chinese License: Conversion or Full Process?
A Chinese driving license cannot be used directly in Germany and cannot be directly exchanged for a German license (unlike licenses from most EU countries or the US/UK). Chinese license holders must complete the full German licensing process. Some schools may acknowledge prior driving experience to reduce required minimum lesson counts — policies vary.
EU license holders (existing Polish, French, or other EU licenses) can convert to a German license through a simplified process without retaking all exams.
