Getting a German Bank Account: The Options for Foreigners in 2025

A German bank account is essential for German life — rent, utilities, German PayPal, salary payments, and most subscriptions require a German IBAN. Getting one as a foreigner, especially without a permanent address or residence permit, used to be difficult. The landscape has improved significantly.

N26 and Vivid (Online-First, Easiest)

N26 and Vivid Money are the most accessible options for newly arrived foreigners. Video-based ID verification (no branch visit required), English-language interface, and Mastercard/Visa debit card issued quickly. N26 Basic is free; premium tiers add travel insurance and higher cash withdrawal limits. The limitation: they are not a good choice as a primary account for German banking culture (some German landlords and employers still prefer traditional bank IBANs, though this is changing). N26 IBANs are accepted everywhere that accepts German IBANs.

Deutsche Bank and Commerzbank (Traditional)

Traditional German banks require an in-person branch visit, ID document, registration address (Anmeldung), and often a residence permit. Commerzbank’s free Girokonto is one of Germany’s better traditional bank products for regular users. The advantage: full-service banking, physical branches, and the “prestige” some older German landlords still associate with established banks. The disadvantage: German-language process, branch visit required, and the free account often requires a monthly salary deposit or minimum balance.

Wise (International)

Wise (formerly TransferWise) offers a multi-currency account with a German IBAN, excellent exchange rates for international transfers, and a debit card. This is ideal for people regularly moving money between Germany and another country — the fee structure is transparent and significantly cheaper than bank transfers for international payments. The limitation: not a full German banking service (no German overdraft, no cash deposits at branches).

The Practical Recommendation

Open N26 or Vivid immediately upon arrival (you can do it before having German registration). Once settled with an Anmeldung and residence permit, consider adding a traditional bank account (Commerzbank free Girokonto) for the situations where it matters. Keep Wise if you make regular international transfers. Most people settle into a two-account arrangement: digital bank for daily use, traditional account for landlord/employer requirements.
