Weekend in Berlin: Museum Island, Mauerpark, and Day Trips

After living in Berlin for a few years, my weekend routine has shifted from hitting all the tourist spots to a more settled rhythm. Here are the places worth revisiting and those I'd recommend to friends visiting from out of town.

Museum Recommendations (Check Opening Status in Advance)

  • Alte Nationalgalerie (Old National Gallery): Houses 19th-century German and European paintings. Excellent collection, far fewer crowds than the Pergamon. Tickets around €12, or use the Museumspass Berlin.
  • Pergamonmuseum (Pergamon Museum): Note — the main hall (with the Market Gate of Miletus and the Pergamon Altar) is closed for major renovations until at least 2027. Check the official website for current exhibits before you go to avoid disappointment.
  • DDR Museum: An interactive exhibition on life in East Germany. Fun and popular — book tickets online in advance (around €13.50).
  • Jüdisches Museum Berlin (Jewish Museum Berlin): Designed by Daniel Libeskind, the building itself is an exhibit. Profound content; plan at least half a day.

Free Things to Do

  • Mauerpark Flea Market (Sundays): Hunt for second-hand books, vinyl records, and vintage clothing. In spring and summer, there's impromptu karaoke. Great atmosphere and completely free entry.
  • Tempelhofer Feld (Tempelhof Airport Park): The former Berlin central airport turned into a massive open green space. Perfect for cycling, picnics, and kite flying — a favorite weekend spot for locals.
  • Mauerweg (Berlin Wall Trail): A path along the former Berlin Wall route. Great for cycling or jogging, with historical information boards along the way.

Reichstag Dome (Must Book in Advance)

The glass dome of the Reichstag offers the best panoramic view of Berlin. Entry is free, but you must book 2-3 weeks in advance on bundestag.de. No reservation means no entry under any circumstances. Bring your passport when you go.

Day Trips (Reachable by S-Bahn)

  • Potsdam's Sanssouci Palace and Gardens: Take S1 or RE1 from central Berlin (40-50 minutes). One of Germany's most beautiful palace estates. Weekdays are better; weekends are crowded. Palace interior tickets cost around €14; the gardens are free.
  • Wannsee Lakeside Beach: Berliners' favorite summer escape with sandy beaches and swimming areas. About 30 minutes from the city center by S-Bahn (S1 or S7). Entry fee around €5.
  • Sachsenhausen Memorial (Sachsenhausen): Former Nazi concentration camp in Oranienburg. About 35 minutes from Berlin by train. Free entry; plan 3-4 hours for your visit.
