Spain from Germany: Where to Go and How to Get There

Spain is among the most popular destinations for Germans travelling abroad — and for good reason. The range of experiences within the country is extraordinary: Atlantic coast, Mediterranean coast, mountains, desert, historic cities, and islands. Here is how to approach a trip from Germany.

Getting There

Flight is the realistic option for most of Spain — trains from Germany to Madrid take 12+ hours via Paris and are not competitive. Low-cost airlines (Ryanair, Eurowings, Wizz Air) run frequent routes from Frankfurt, Düsseldorf, Berlin, and Munich to Barcelona, Madrid, Palma, Málaga, Alicante, and Seville. Booking 6–8 weeks out typically gives the best balance of price and availability. Luggage fees are substantial with budget airlines — factor them in.

Barcelona

Barcelona deserves its reputation but requires planning. The Sagrada Família requires advance booking (several weeks out in summer). The Gothic Quarter is extremely crowded — visit very early or late. The real Barcelona experience is in the Eixample and Gràcia neighbourhoods — tapas bars, vermouth culture, modernista architecture away from the tour groups. Pickpocketing is a genuine risk on Las Ramblas and in crowded tourist spots: use a cross-body bag and keep phones in front pockets.

Madrid

Madrid’s triangle of museums — the Prado, Reina Sofía (Guernica), and Thyssen-Bornemisza — is one of the world’s best museum concentrations. The city is best understood through its bars and squares at night: the Malasaña and Lavapiés neighbourhoods have genuine local character. Late dining culture (restaurants open for dinner at 9pm, full until midnight) requires adjustment from northern European habits.

Alternatives to Barcelona and Madrid

Seville, Granada (the Alhambra requires booking months in advance), Valencia (paella was invented here — order it at traditional restaurants that state a minimum of two people), and San Sebastián (Basque country, one of Europe’s strongest food cities) all offer distinct experiences worth choosing over the main tourist routes.
