AI Pre-Submission Review: Catching Problems Before Reviewers Do

The gap between “paper finished” and “paper ready to submit” matters more than most researchers realize. Reviewer rejections often cite problems that would have been caught by another careful reading. AI pre-submission review adds a systematic check without requiring a human reviewer’s time.

The Five-Prompt Checklist

Paste your paper (or major sections) and run these prompts sequentially. Each targets a specific category of problem that reviewers cite most often.

Prompt 1 — Argument structure: “Read this manuscript. What is the central claim? Does every section of the paper support this claim? Are there sections that seem disconnected from the main argument?” This catches papers that have drifted from their original question during revision.

Prompt 2 — Evidence gaps: “What claims in this paper are made without supporting evidence or citations? List them by section.” This catches assertions that feel obvious to you after months with the data but need support for a cold reader.

Prompt 3 — Method section completeness: “Could a researcher in this field replicate the analysis from the methods section as written? What information is missing?” Replication sufficiency is a common reviewer complaint and can be checked systematically.

Prompt 4 — Abstract accuracy: “Does the abstract accurately represent what the paper actually finds? Are any claims in the abstract not supported or nuanced differently in the main text?” Abstract-body discrepancies are embarrassing and avoidable.

Prompt 5 — Discussion overclaiming: “In the discussion section, what claims go beyond what the data in this paper support? What does the paper say it found versus what it actually demonstrated?” This is the most common reason for reviewer rejection in empirical work.

Limitations of AI Review

AI doesn’t know your field’s specific norms, can’t evaluate statistical choices with domain judgment, and may miss errors in specialized methods. It’s a structural and rhetorical check, not a scientific peer review. Use it as a first filter; a human expert review is still essential before high-stakes submission.
