Finding permanent housing in Germany takes longer than most newcomers expect — weeks in smaller cities, months in Munich, Berlin, or Frankfurt. Planning for a temporary arrangement before you arrive is not optional; it is the standard situation.
Student Dormitories with Short-Stay Options
Most Studentenwerke (student services organizations) operate dormitories (Studentenwohnheime) with waiting lists of 6–18 months for long-term rooms. A few also maintain guest rooms or semester-start overflow places for newly enrolled students — these book out in August and September for the winter semester. Check your university’s Studentenwerk website directly, under “Wohnheime” or “Kurzzeitunterkünfte,” two to three months before arrival.
Hostels: Cheaper Than Hotels, Practical for 2–6 Weeks
A private room in a reputable central hostel typically costs €40–80 per night in major German cities. For a stay of two to four weeks this is expensive, but hostels require no lease, no deposit, and minimal setup. Look for ones that offer weekly rates — they often price down to €200–350 per week for a private room, which is manageable for a short transition period.
Avoid the cheapest options: dorm-style hostels are hard to work from, loud, and unsuitable for anything longer than a weekend.
Airbnb and Wunderflats
Airbnb works in Germany but is regulated in some cities (Berlin has strict short-let rules). Wunderflats specifically targets the furnished apartment short-stay market — typically monthly contracts, furnished, bills included. Prices run €800–1,500/month depending on city and size, but the all-inclusive pricing makes budgeting straightforward. Good for the first 1–3 months while you search for a permanent flat.
WG-Zimmer on Interim Basis
WG-Gesucht.de and Immobilienscout24 both list rooms in flat-shares (WGs) that are available for interim periods (Zwischenmiete) — typically 1–6 months while the regular tenant is away. These are often fully furnished and priced reasonably. Search with the “Zwischenmiete” filter on WG-Gesucht. Availability is high in July–September (student travels abroad) and drops sharply in October.
What to Have Ready for Any of These
Passport or national ID, a German or international bank card, and cash for deposits. For Airbnb and Wunderflats, email confirmation serves as proof of address for your Anmeldung (registration) — which you need within 14 days of arriving in Germany.
