German Gym Contracts: What to Check Before You Sign and How to Cancel

German Fitnessstudio contracts are notoriously tricky. The law protects gyms more than consumers in some areas, and a signature that takes 30 seconds can tie you to 24 monthly payments. These are the specific things to check.

Contract Duration

Most German gym contracts run 12 or 24 months with automatic renewal. A 24-month contract at €30/month that auto-renews is €720 minimum. The renewal period is usually 12 months if you don’t cancel in time. The standard cancellation notice (Kündigungsfrist) is 3 months before the contract end date — miss it and you’re locked in for another year.

Termination Rights

You can terminate a German gym contract early (außerordentliche Kündigung) in specific circumstances: if you move to a location more than 15–20 km from any branch of the gym chain, if you become permanently unable to exercise due to health reasons (doctor’s certificate required), or if the gym significantly changes its services (price increases, facility closures). Standard job loss or financial hardship is not a legal basis for early termination.

Chains vs Independent Studios

McFit, FitX, and John Reed (all under RSG Group) are budget chains at €17–25/month with 12-month contracts. EVO Fitness and Clever Fit are similar. Urban Sports Club offers a monthly subscription to multiple studios (no long-term commitment), with access to 50+ different types of fitness — higher cost (~€60–90/month) but flexible. Premium chains (Holmes Place, VirginActive where available, local premium studios) run €80–120/month.

How to Cancel

Cancel by registered letter (eingeschriebener Brief) — email cancellations are not legally sufficient for all contracts. State your membership number, the contract end date, and your request to cancel at the earliest possible date. Send it 3 months before contract end (check your specific contract). Keep the postal receipt as proof. Some chains now accept digital cancellation through their app — verify this in your contract before relying on it.

Alternatives

Stadtbad (public swimming pools) and Sportzentren (city sports centers) often offer monthly memberships without 12-month commitments at similar or lower prices than commercial gyms. University sports programs (Hochschulsport) are heavily subsidized for students: €20–60/semester covering gym, courses, and sports facilities.
