Brutto vs Netto: Understanding Your German Salary Slip

German salary negotiations happen in Brutto (gross) numbers. Your Netto (net take-home) is significantly lower — typically 30–45% below gross depending on income, tax class, and where you live. Knowing how to calculate your real income before accepting an offer saves surprises.

What Gets Deducted

Deductions from gross salary fall into two categories: social security contributions and income tax.

Social security is split between you and your employer (each pays roughly the same amount). Your half covers: health insurance (~7.3% + provider surcharge), pension (9.3%), unemployment (1.3%), and care insurance (1.7–2.4% depending on whether you have children). These deductions total roughly 20–22% of gross.

Income tax depends on your tax class (Steuerklasse). Single earners without children are in class I — tax rate varies from 0% up to 42% in progressive steps. Add a 5.5% Solidaritätszuschlag on top of your tax (for incomes above €73,000 from 2021). If you’re Catholic or Protestant, church tax (8–9% of your income tax) also applies.

Tax Classes

Class I: single or separated. Class II: single parents. Class III/V: married couples where one earns more (III gives lower rates; V is for the lower-earning spouse). Class IV: married couples with similar incomes. Class VI: for a second job. Your tax class affects your monthly take-home — couples often switch to III/V to optimize cash flow.

A Practical Example

Gross salary €4,000/month, single, class I, Bavaria: social contributions ≈ €830, income tax ≈ €590. Net take-home ≈ €2,580. About 64.5% of gross. At €6,000 gross: net is around €3,600 (60%). Online calculators at brutto-netto.de give precise figures.

The 13th Salary (Weihnachtsgeld)

Some companies pay a 13th monthly salary (Weihnachtsgeld) in November. This is not mandatory but common in certain sectors (banking, automotive, public sector). Check your contract — it may be conditional on remaining employed until year end.
