A German Lohnabrechnung (pay slip) shows gross salary, a dozen deduction categories, and a net amount — but the categories aren’t always intuitive, especially for international employees encountering the German social insurance system for the first time.
What a German Pay Slip Contains
Gross salary (Bruttogehalt): Your total agreed compensation before deductions. This is the number your employment contract states.
Lohnsteuer (income tax): Deducted based on your Steuerklasse (tax class). Single workers are usually in class 1; married couples in classes 3 and 5 or both in class 4.
Solidaritätszuschlag (solidarity surcharge): A small additional levy, largely phased out for most earners since 2021 but sometimes still appearing.
Kirchensteuer (church tax): 8-9% of income tax, deducted if you’re registered as a church member in Germany. Register your departure from the church (Kirchenaustritt) at your local Standesamt if you don’t want this deduction.
Social insurance: Four separate deductions split roughly 50/50 between you and your employer — Rentenversicherung (pension, 18.6% total), Krankenversicherung (health insurance, ~14.6% + Zusatzbeitrag), Pflegeversicherung (long-term care insurance, ~3.4%), Arbeitslosenversicherung (unemployment, 2.6%).
Using AI to Understand Your Pay Slip
Photograph or scan your Lohnabrechnung and upload to Claude.ai or ChatGPT. Ask: “Explain each line item on this German pay slip in plain English. Are the deductions correct for a single person in Steuerklasse 1 earning [gross amount]?”
AI will walk through each deduction, tell you whether the percentages look correct, and explain what you’re contributing to and what you receive in return. This is particularly useful when you start a new job and want to verify your first pay slip is correct.
Common Pay Slip Errors to Watch For
Wrong Steuerklasse: If your employer’s payroll department has the wrong tax class, you pay more or less income tax than you should. Check your Lohnsteuerbescheinigung (annual tax statement) against your tax class.
Kirchensteuer still being deducted after Kirchenaustritt: The deduction can continue for 1-2 pay periods after you officially leave the church. After that, contact your employer’s HR if it continues.
Wrong Krankenkasse Zusatzbeitrag: The supplementary health insurance contribution should match your insurer’s published rate. If the deduction is higher than your insurer charges, check with HR.
The Annual Steuererklärung
As an employee in Germany, you can voluntarily file an annual tax return (Steuererklärung) — and in most cases, international employees get money back, especially in their first year in Germany when they weren’t present for the full year. AI can help you understand what to include, but the actual filing is best done through ELSTER (the German tax authority’s portal) or with a Steuerberater for your first year.
