In Munich, Berlin, Frankfurt, and Hamburg, WG rooms disappear within hours of posting. Sending 50 standard applications and hearing nothing back is normal. The people who succeed use different tactics from the beginning.
Where to Look
WG-Gesucht.de is the dominant platform for shared apartments in Germany. Set up a search agent that emails you new listings instantly — not daily, instantly. In Munich and Berlin, rooms at good prices are gone within 2–3 hours of posting. Enable push notifications on the app.
Facebook groups for your city produce rooms faster than any platform (search “[City] WG Zimmer” or “[City] Wohnungssuche”). These are often less formal, which helps if you have no SCHUFA. Groups for international students also exist in most university cities.
University notice boards (both physical and online forums like moodle or university housing portals) list rooms that never appear on WG-Gesucht. Check these weekly if you’re a student.
Writing an Application That Gets Replies
Flatmates choose who they live with, not just who pays rent. Your application needs to say something real about you in 4–5 sentences: what you do, what kind of person you are, what you care about at home (quiet, clean, social, etc.), and something specific about why this apartment appeals to you. Don’t send the same template to 30 places — the templates that sound like templates get filtered out.
Add a photo. Not required, but it gets responses. Mention if you cook, if you keep odd hours, if you have instruments. Specific information beats formal language every time.
Following Up
If you applied two days ago and heard nothing, send one follow-up message. Say you’re still looking and ask if they’re still taking applications. Pushy follow-ups backfire; one polite message doesn’t.
Timing
Most WG room searches succeed within 3–6 weeks for students. For workers with stricter requirements (no Anmeldung possible until room found), book a short-term furnished room (Zwischenmiete) for 1–2 months and search from there. Searching from a stable temporary address is much less stressful and lets you attend viewings quickly.
