How to Find a Family Doctor (Hausarzt) in Germany

Why You Need a Hausarzt (General Practitioner)

In Germany, the Hausarzt (family doctor / general practitioner) is your first point of contact for most non-emergency health issues. Think of them as a gatekeeper: if you need a specialist (Facharzt), you usually need a referral (Überweisung) from your Hausarzt. This system keeps healthcare organized and ensures you see the right doctor at the right time.

How to Search for a Hausarzt

Start your search online. The most popular platforms are:

  • Jameda.de – Germany's largest doctor rating site. You can filter by location, language (English!), and insurance type (public vs. private).
  • Doctolib.de – Great for booking appointments directly online. Many doctors list their available slots here.
  • Your Krankenkasse (health insurance) website – Most public insurers (like TK, AOK, Barmer) have a doctor search tool. They often list doctors who are accepting new patients (Neupatienten).

Pro tip: If you speak English, filter for 'English' on Jameda or Doctolib. Many doctors in big cities (Berlin, Munich, Frankfurt) speak English, but smaller towns may have fewer options.

Calling vs. Online Booking

In Germany, many doctor's offices still prefer phone calls. But online booking is becoming more common. Here's what to do:

  • Online booking: Use Doctolib or the doctor's own website. You'll see available slots and can book instantly.
  • Calling: Be prepared to speak German (or have a German-speaking friend help). Say: 'Ich möchte einen Termin als Neupatient vereinbaren' (I'd like to make an appointment as a new patient). They may ask for your insurance type and reason for visit.

If you don't speak German well, try emailing the practice (Praxis) – many accept email requests. Or ask a colleague to call for you.

What to Bring to Your First Appointment

When you go to your first appointment, bring:

  • Krankenversichertenkarte (health insurance card) – This is essential. Your doctor will scan it to confirm your coverage.
  • Passport or ID – Some practices ask for it for registration.
  • Any previous medical records (if you have them from China or another country).

Your first visit is usually a 'getting to know you' session (Erstgespräch). The doctor will ask about your medical history, allergies, and medications. It's a good time to mention any chronic conditions.

What If No GP Accepts New Patients?

This can happen, especially in popular neighborhoods. If you call 5-10 practices and all say 'Wir nehmen keine Neupatienten auf' (We are not accepting new patients), don't panic. You have options:

  • Call 116117 – This is the medical on-call service (ärztlicher Bereitschaftsdienst). They can help you find a doctor who is accepting new patients, or give you an appointment within a few days.
  • Try a different neighborhood – Doctors in less central areas often have capacity.
  • Consider a 'Praxisklinik' – Some larger practices (Praxiskliniken) have multiple doctors and may accept new patients more easily.

English-Speaking Doctors: Where to Find Them

If your German is limited, look for English-speaking doctors via:

  • Expat Facebook groups – Groups like 'Expats in Berlin' or 'Chinese in Germany' often have recommendations.
  • Embassy lists – The US, UK, and Canadian embassies maintain lists of English-speaking doctors. These are useful even if you're not from those countries.
  • Jameda filter – As mentioned, use the language filter.

Urgent but Not Emergency? Use 116117

If you have a medical issue that can't wait for a regular appointment but isn't life-threatening (e.g., high fever, bad infection, sprained ankle), call 116117. This is the medical on-call service. They can:

  • Give you medical advice over the phone (in German, sometimes English).
  • Direct you to a Notfallpraxis (emergency practice) – these are walk-in clinics attached to hospitals, open evenings and weekends.
  • Arrange a home visit if you can't travel.

Note: 116117 is not for emergencies like heart attack or severe bleeding – for those, call 112.

Teleclinic Apps for Quicker Access

If you need a quick consultation for a minor issue (cold, rash, prescription refill), consider teleclinic apps:

  • TeleClinic – Works with public insurance. You can see a doctor via video call within hours.
  • Zava – Good for prescriptions and simple consultations.
  • Your insurance's app – Many insurers (like TK) offer free telemedicine services.

These are great while you're still searching for a permanent Hausarzt.

Emergency (Notaufnahme) vs. Notfallpraxis

Know the difference:

  • Notaufnahme (emergency room) – For life-threatening emergencies. Go here if you have chest pain, severe bleeding, difficulty breathing, or loss of consciousness. Call 112.
  • Notfallpraxis (emergency practice) – For urgent but non-life-threatening issues. These are usually open evenings, weekends, and holidays. You can walk in without an appointment.

Using the Notfallpraxis instead of the ER saves time and resources.

What to Do Before Finding a GP

If you haven't found a Hausarzt yet, here's your action plan:

  1. Register with a Hausarzt as soon as you arrive – Don't wait until you're sick.
  2. Keep your insurance card handy – You'll need it for any doctor visit.
  3. Know your nearest Apotheke (pharmacy) – Pharmacists can give advice for minor issues and sell over-the-counter medications.
  4. Save 116117 in your phone – It's your go-to for urgent non-emergency help.
  5. Learn a few key phrases – 'Ich habe Schmerzen' (I have pain), 'Ich brauche einen Termin' (I need an appointment), 'Sprechen Sie Englisch?' (Do you speak English?).

Finding a Hausarzt in Germany takes a bit of effort, but once you're registered, you'll have a reliable medical home. Good luck, and stay healthy!
