Germany’s family support system (Familienleistungen) is substantial and extends to many non-German residents. International families, students with children, and EU citizens often don’t claim benefits they’re entitled to — costing them hundreds or thousands of euros annually.
Kindergeld (Child Benefit)
Kindergeld is paid monthly for each child: €250/child/month in 2025 (typically adjusted annually). Eligibility criteria: you’re employed in Germany and paying taxes, or you’re an EU citizen with free movement rights and the child lives with you, or you have a valid German residence permit (Niederlassungserlaubnis, Aufenthaltserlaubnis for employment, Blue Card, etc.). Students on a student visa (Studienvisum) are generally not eligible unless they also have German employment income.
Application: Familienkasse at your local Agentur für Arbeit. Processing takes 2-4 months; payments are retroactive once approved. Bring: residence permit, child’s birth certificate (certified German translation required if not in German), proof of child’s residence in Germany.
Kinderzuschlag (Child Supplement)
For families where income is above the Bürgergeld threshold but insufficient to cover children’s needs: up to €292/month per child additionally (2025). Income-tested. This supplement often goes unclaimed because families don’t know it exists.
Elterngeld (Parental Allowance)
For the first 14 months after childbirth: replaces 65-67% of pre-birth net income, up to €1,800/month. Both parents can take Elterngeld; 2 months are reserved for each parent (“Partnermonate”). The 14-month maximum applies when both parents take leave. Non-German residents employed in Germany are generally eligible.
ElterngeldPlus: a “half rate for double time” option — receive half the Elterngeld rate for twice as long, enabling part-time return to work. Useful for students finishing a degree or professionals who want to return part-time.
Kinderfreibetrag (Child Tax Allowance)
Automatic tax deduction of €9,312/year per child (2025) if this is more beneficial than Kindergeld (typically for higher incomes). The Finanzamt automatically calculates which is more advantageous when you file your Steuererklärung.
Practical Application Process
Apply immediately when eligible — Kindergeld is not retroactive more than 6 months (in most cases). The Familienkasse website has forms in German; use AI to translate and fill them. German support available in all larger Agenturen für Arbeit. Processing time varies widely by regional Familienkasse — Munich Familienkasse is typically slower than less-burdened regions.
