Commercial Remote Sensing Satellites: Data Economy and Applications from Defense to Civil Markets

Commercial Earth observation satellites image the Earth’s surface with optical or radar sensors to obtain surface characteristic and change information. Traditionally, high-resolution Earth observation satellites were national-level infrastructure (China Resource Satellites, GF series; US Keyhole series) — high data costs, poor timeliness, government/military-only access. Commercial remote sensing’s rise changed this: remote sensing data productized and subscribed, available to all paying users.

## Technology Classification

**Optical remote sensing**: visible + near-infrared imaging; most intuitive — like high-resolution aerial photos. Resolution ranges from 50cm (commercial high-end) to several meters (standard commercial) to tens of meters (Landsat/Sentinel free data). Cloud cover is the biggest constraint (~50% of the time clouds obscure).

**SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar)**: active microwave imaging; penetrates clouds and rain; all-weather, all-day imaging — but image interpretation is harder than optical. Significant advantages for flood monitoring, agricultural soil moisture, and maritime target detection (vessel identification). Finnish Iceye, Chinese commercial startups, and the European Copernicus program (Sentinel-1) are representative SAR systems.

**Multispectral/hyperspectral**: capturing data across more bands (red, near-infrared, shortwave infrared, etc.), enabling identification of vegetation health (NDVI), mineral composition, soil moisture — information ordinary optical cannot distinguish. Widely used in precision agriculture and geological exploration.

## Major Commercial Remote Sensing Companies

**Global**: Planet Labs (US — largest daily global coverage commercial remote sensing service; Dove + SkySat constellations; subscription + data API); Maxar Technologies (US — highest-resolution commercial optical satellites; WorldView series; 30cm resolution); Airbus Defence & Space (Pléiades NEO; 30cm high resolution — Europe’s highest-end commercial remote sensing).

**China**: Chang Guang Satellite (Jilin-1 constellation; 100+ satellites in orbit; commercial remote sensing data service for government and enterprise); Aerospace Hongtu (HiScene; listed on A-share); 21AT (Twenty-First Century Aerospace Technology).

## Data Application Scenarios

**Precision agriculture**: crop growth monitoring (NDVI), yield prediction, disaster assessment (drought, flooding); insurance companies using remote sensing data for agricultural insurance claim verification (replacing manual field inspections).

**Financial analysis**: parking lot vehicle counting (predicting retailer foot traffic); port vessel counts (assessing bulk commodity import/export activity); factory chimney thermal infrared (assessing industrial production activity) — an important component of the Alternative Data field.
