Claude Projects (Anthropic’s persistent workspace feature) allows you to set up a persistent context for ongoing tasks. For expats managing German life across multiple sessions, setting up a well-configured Claude Project removes the overhead of re-explaining your situation every conversation.
Setting Up Your Germany Life Project
In Claude.ai, create a new Project and add a custom instruction block. Your instruction block should include: your current status (visa type, city, employer or university), language level (B2, C1, native English speaker), key recurring contexts (ongoing visa process, job search, specific bureaucratic processes in progress), and how you want responses formatted (always show German phrases with English translations, explain bureaucratic terms when you use them, give me official German terms not just English descriptions).
Example Project System Prompt
“I’m a Chinese PhD student at TU Munich. I arrived in September 2024 on a student visa and am working as a Werkstudent (20 hours/week). My German is B2 level. I’m in the middle of applying for a Niederlassungserlaubnis after finishing my degree. I need help with: 1) German administrative tasks (always include the official German term in parentheses), 2) Understanding German documents (translate and explain, don’t just translate), 3) German writing (formal German with Sie-form unless specified). When I share German text, translate it AND explain any bureaucratic implications.”
Document Storage in Claude Projects
Claude Projects allows uploading files that persist across conversations. Useful documents to upload: your current visa and its conditions (so Claude understands your legal status), your rental contract key terms (so Claude knows your rental situation), your employment contract key terms, the local Mietspiegel for your city. With these uploaded, you can ask specific questions without re-explaining context each time.
Specialized Sub-Projects
Create separate Projects for distinct long-running tasks: “Job Search” Project with your CV, job requirements, and German cover letter template. “Visa Application” Project with your current application status and required documents. “Tax Return” Project with your income sources and deduction records. Keeping these separate maintains focused context without cross-contamination.
Limitations to Know
Claude Projects doesn’t browse the web in real-time — for current visa requirements, rent prices, or regulatory updates, you still need to check current official sources. The project context improves how Claude helps you process and draft documents, not its knowledge of current German law or prices. Update your project instructions when your situation changes (new visa, moved cities, changed jobs).
