China’s Health Industry Landscape: Track Distribution and Investment Logic in the Trillion-Yuan Health Economy

“Health Industry” (大健康) in China’s policy context is a health economy concept that goes beyond traditional medical care, encompassing prevention, treatment, rehabilitation, health management, health food, and sports fitness along the full chain. The “Healthy China 2030” plan sets a health industry scale target of over 16 trillion RMB (~$2.3 trillion) by 2030, making it one of China’s strategic emerging industries.

## Six-Track Analysis

**Medical services**: public hospitals (~36,000 secondary-and-above hospitals nationwide) form the foundation; private medical care (Aier Eye Hospital, Tongce Medical, Haiji’a Medical) focuses on specialty tracks like ophthalmology, dental, and oncology. Internet healthcare (Alibaba Health, JD Health, Ping An Good Doctor) centers on consultation, prescription drug delivery, and chronic disease management.

**Pharmaceuticals**: three parallel tracks — innovative drugs (Betta Pharmaceuticals, Junshi Biosciences, Innovent Biologics), Chinese patent medicines (Yunnan Baiyao, Pianzai, Tong Ren Tang), and generic drugs (market restructuring post consistency evaluation). Medical insurance negotiation “floor price” pressure continuously compresses generic drug margins, pushing companies toward innovation.

**Medical devices**: domestic substitution is the dominant theme. High-value consumables (cardiac stents, joint prostheses) saw 80-90% price drops after centralized procurement; imaging equipment (Mindray, United Imaging) is breaking through in mid-to-high-end markets; in vitro diagnostics (IVD) continues deepening post-COVID testing demand.

**Health management**: genetic testing (BGI, Annoroad), wearable health devices (Huawei Band/Watch, Apple Watch), and physical examination chains (Meinian Health, iKang) form consumer entry points.

**Health food**: meal replacements (Boohee, Smeal), functional beverages (Oriental Leaves, BUFFX probiotic gummies), sports nutrition (MuscleTech, Caibo), and TCM wellness foods (Guyuan paste, donkey-hide gelatin, bird’s nest).

**Fitness and sports**: gyms shifted from expansion bubble (Keep, Super Monkey) to premium/community focus; outdoor sports (hiking, climbing, frisbee, flag football) became new youth consumption scenarios; sports medicine and sports rehabilitation entered high-growth phase.
