China’s Reusable Rockets: Zhuque-3, Tianlong-3, and Commercial Aerospace’s Technical Leap

Reusable rockets are the core cost-reduction pathway in modern commercial aerospace. SpaceX Falcon 9’s first stage has been recovered and reused over 300 times (as of 2025), reducing per-kilogram-to-orbit costs from approximately $10,000 for traditional expendable rockets to roughly $2,700 — a ~70% reduction. This cost revolution enabled satellite internet constellations, small satellite commercialization, and fundamentally restructured the global launch market.

## China’s Commercial Aerospace Reusable Track

**LandSpace (Zhuque series)**: Zhuque-2 is China’s first commercial liquid oxygen-methane rocket; completed orbital launch in 2023. Methane propellant aligns with SpaceX Starship’s technical route (higher specific impulse, better reusability). **Zhuque-3** is LandSpace’s reusable rocket — conducting vertical takeoff and vertical landing (VTVL) key technology validation in 2024–2025, targeting Falcon 9-style first-stage recovery and reuse.

**Tianbing Technology (Tianlong series)**: Tianlong-2 is a liquid oxygen-kerosene rocket that has completed orbital launches. **Tianlong-3** is a large reusable LOX-kerosene rocket with 35-ton LEO capacity; static fire tests completed in 2024; in an early 2025 incident the rocket separated from the test stand — no casualties; development continues.

**Deep Blue Aerospace**: focused on small reusable rockets; Nebula-1 has completed multiple hop tests (SpaceX Grasshopper-style), one of China’s fastest-progressing VTVL technology validation platforms.

## Gap Analysis and Catch-Up Path

The current gap between Chinese commercial reusable rockets and Falcon 9 lies primarily in: engine thrust and reliability (Merlin engine has iterated for 10+ years); first-stage recovery guidance precision (landing leg deployment and thrust vector control); and turnaround time (Falcon 9 ready for relaunch within days of recovery). Catch-up path: accumulating data through rapid testing iteration; LOX-methane engine routes (Tiankong TQ-12, LandSpace Tianque) providing a better reusability foundation.
