Belgium from Germany: Brussels, Bruges, and Belgian Beer Culture

Belgium is one of Europe’s most underrated short trip destinations from Germany — 2–3 hours by train from Cologne or Frankfurt, with remarkable art, one of the world’s great beer cultures, excellent chocolate, and Bruges as one of the best-preserved medieval cities in Europe.

Getting There

Cologne to Brussels by Thalys or ICE: 1h45. Frankfurt to Brussels: 3 hours by ICE/Thalys direct. Brussels to Bruges: 1 hour by train (frequent direct service). By car, Cologne to Bruges is 3 hours. Bruges is more compact and often a better base for a first visit; Brussels for the EU institutions, Grand Place, and Art Nouveau architecture.

Bruges

Bruges (Brugge in Dutch) is one of the best-preserved medieval cities in Europe — a UNESCO World Heritage city with medieval towers, canals, and the Groeningemuseum (Jan van Eyck, Hans Memling, and the Flemish Primitives in the finest collection outside major international museums). The Markt square and Burg square are the architectural centre; the canal system is best explored by boat or on foot. It is genuinely beautiful and also significantly touristic in summer — visit in winter or early spring.

Belgian Beer

Belgian beer is one of the world’s great brewing traditions — Trappist beers (Westvleteren, Chimay, Rochefort, brewed by monks), Lambic and Gueuze (spontaneously fermented sour beers), Saison, and hundreds of abbey ales. A beer café (brugsiche bierhalle) in Bruges with a serious beer menu is one of Europe’s most distinctive drinking experiences. Delirium Café in Brussels claims 3,000+ beer varieties on its menu.

Chocolate and Waffles

Belgian chocolate (Neuhaus, Pierre Marcolini, Galler, and hundreds of smaller chocolatiers) is made with genuinely high cocoa content using traditional tempering — distinct from mass-market chocolate. Belgian waffles in Belgium come in two styles: Brussels (light, rectangular, often with toppings) and Liège (denser, sweeter, with caramelised sugar pearls). A Liège waffle from a street stand is one of the best cheap food experiences in Europe.
