Germany's dual vocational training system (Ausbildung) is one of the least-understood pathways available to international residents. While most expats assume university is the only route into a skilled career, around 40% of Germans enter the workforce through an Ausbildung — and many of the same pathways are legally open to non-EU residents with a valid residence permit.
How an Ausbildung Works
An Ausbildung typically takes 2–3.5 years. You split your time between a company (3–4 days per week) and a vocational school (Berufsschule, 1–2 days per week). The company pays you a training salary (Ausbildungsvergütung) throughout — not a wage in the full sense, but enough to cover basic living costs. By the end, you hold a nationally recognized qualification and have two to three years of practical experience.
What It Pays
Since 2020, German law sets a minimum Ausbildungsvergütung: €649/month in the first year, rising by €100–150 each subsequent year. In practice, many sectors pay more — banking and insurance Ausbildungen pay €800–1,100/month, IT apprenticeships €900–1,200/month. Logistics and trade apprenticeships typically start at €700–900/month.
The Most Accessible Fields for International Applicants
Skilled trades with labor shortages actively recruit international applicants: Fachinformatiker (IT specialist), Kaufmann im E-Commerce (e-commerce specialist), Mechatroniker (mechatronics engineer), Elektroniker (electrician), Pflegefachmann/frau (nursing). For trades and healthcare, German language at B1–B2 level is typically required. For IT roles, some companies accept English-dominant applicants.
How to Apply
The Bundesagentur für Arbeit's KURSNET and Ausbildungsplatzbörse list available Ausbildungsplätze across all sectors. Applications look similar to job applications: CV, Anschreiben, school transcripts. Most Ausbildung positions start each September — applications open six to twelve months in advance.
For non-EU residents: you need either an Aufenthaltserlaubnis zum Zweck der Ausbildung or an existing residence permit that permits vocational training. The BAMF (Federal Office for Migration and Refugees) can clarify your specific situation.
