Step-by-Step: Online Anmeldung with a Residence Permit
Step 1 — Download the Ausweis App
Download the AusweisApp (available on iOS and Android). This app reads your residence permit's NFC chip and creates a secure digital identity session.
Step 2 — Find Your City's Online Portal
Search for "Anmeldung online [your city or postcode]" in a browser. You're looking for the official city hall (Bürgeramt) website. Select the Online Services section, then choose the Anmeldung option linked to BundID.
Step 3 — Create or Log Into BundID
BundID is Germany's central digital identity account. If you don't have one yet, create a new account and choose the residence permit option when asked which document to use.
Step 4 — Verify Your Identity with NFC
The registration flow will redirect you to the AusweisApp. Follow the prompts:
- Hold your residence permit to the back of your phone

If you've just arrived and don't yet have your residence permit (only a visa), you'll need to do the Anmeldung in person at the Bürgeramt.
