Anmeldung in Germany: How to Register Your Address and What Happens If You Don’t

Anmeldung (officially: Wohnsitzanmeldung) is the legal requirement to register your residential address with the local authorities within 14 days of moving into your accommodation in Germany. It’s not optional. Most of the German administrative system assumes you’ve done it — without it, you can’t open a bank account, can’t get a German phone contract, can’t receive your tax ID (Steueridentifikationsnummer), and can’t obtain some residence permit extensions.

What You Need

  • Appointment at the Einwohnermeldeamt (citizen registration office, also part of the Bürgeramt): book online at your city’s municipal website. In Berlin: service.berlin.de. In Munich: muenchen.de/buergerinfo. In Hamburg: hamburg.de/buergerservice. Many cities have very high demand — book the appointment on the same day your accommodation is confirmed, even if it’s weeks before you move in.
  • Wohnungsgeberbestätigung: a confirmation from your landlord (or the person whose name is on the lease) that you live at the address. This is mandatory and your landlord is legally required to provide it within two weeks. It’s a standardized form available online.
  • Passport or national identity card
  • Completed Anmeldeformular: the registration form, available at the Bürgeramt or downloadable in advance from your city’s website. Fill it before the appointment.

What the Appointment Looks Like

Takes five to ten minutes. The official registers your address, gives you a Meldebescheinigung (certificate of registration) on the spot. Keep this document — it’s used repeatedly in German administration (for bank accounts, insurance, Rundfunkbeitrag, visa applications).

If You Can’t Get an Appointment in Time

High-demand cities like Berlin have waiting times of four to eight weeks for Bürgeramt appointments. Register online as early as possible. If the 14-day deadline passes before your appointment, document your attempts (screenshot the booking system showing no availability). Courts and authorities are generally pragmatic about documented good-faith efforts in cities with known appointment shortages.

Some cities have walk-in capacity at specific branches on specific days — check your city’s official website for current walk-in policies.

What Anmeldung Unlocks

  • German bank account at traditional banks (Sparkasse, Deutsche Bank require Anmeldung)
  • Tax identification number (Steueridentifikationsnummer) arrives by post 2-4 weeks after Anmeldung
  • Health insurance GKV enrollment (some Krankenkassen require it)
  • German mobile phone contracts
  • Residence permit extension documentation for non-EU nationals
  • Proof of German residence for numerous applications (drivers license conversion, pension applications, etc.)

Deregistering When You Leave

When leaving Germany permanently, you must Abmelden (deregister) at the Bürgeramt — bring your passport and the same form, now completed as a deregistration. You receive an Abmeldebestätigung (deregistration certificate). This document is required when applying for Rentenversicherung refund and for various other formal processes after departure.
