Facing quarantine—whether due to travel, being a close contact of a confirmed case, or testing positive for COVID-19—can be stressful. To help you pack quickly if you need to leave for a quarantine facility, here’s a practical checklist based on firsthand experience from our team. This guide covers three scenarios you might encounter in Germany: government quarantine centers, quarantine hotels, and hospitals.
Essential Items
- ID card, passport, or any identification documents
- Vaccination certificate (if vaccinated)
- Chargers and cables for electronic devices
- Portable Wi-Fi hotspot (a 4G SIM card in a mobile device can serve as your internet source)
- Power strip
- Kitchen roll, plastic containers, plastic food bags
- Salt, pepper, and your favorite condiments (ketchup, mustard, marinades, etc.)
- Plates, cups, and cutlery
- Tray, small chopping board, knife, scissors, can opener
- Washing-up bowl, detergent, dish soap, and tea towel
- Non-perishable food: canned goods (fish or vegetables are easy), instant noodles, porridge, etc.
- Tea bags, instant coffee
- Laundry detergent, laundry bag, metal hangers, and hooks
- Disinfecting wipes for cleaning
- Room spray (for disinfection and freshening the air)
- Books, magazines, yoga mat, and other items to pass the time
- Laptop and headphones
- Your favorite bottle of wine or spirits (theoretically not allowed, but they won't check your luggage)
- Loose clothing, underwear, and sportswear
- Slippers
- Toiletries (toothbrush, toothpaste, facial cleanser, etc.)
- Thermometer, masks, basic medications, and supplements
- If space permits: electric kettle, toaster, rice cooker, microwave, etc.
Quarantine Hotel
Quarantine in a hotel is generally more relaxed and flexible compared to other facilities. You can order items online and have them delivered to your room more easily. You'll also have access to the hotel's Wi-Fi (though speed varies) and a mini-fridge.
Consider these extras to improve your stay:
- HDMI cable (to connect your laptop or other device to the hotel TV)
- If your room has enough space, bring home exercise equipment like a jump rope and resistance bands, or even larger items like a treadmill or exercise bike. There are even specialized fitness programs designed for people in quarantine.
