Vietnamese Food in Germany: Pho, Banh Mi, and the Community Behind Them

Germany has one of Europe’s largest Vietnamese communities — around 200,000 people, concentrated particularly in Berlin and in the eastern states where Vietnamese workers arrived during the communist era (East Germany had a guest worker agreement with Vietnam in the 1980s). This has created a genuine Vietnamese food culture that goes well beyond the tourist-adapted version.

The Berlin Vietnamese Scene

Berlin has the highest concentration of Vietnamese restaurants in Germany, and the quality ranges from excellent to poor. The best Vietnamese restaurants are in Wedding, Marzahn, and Lichtenberg — historically Vietnamese neighbourhoods from East German times — where the community is more established and the food is less adapted for German tastes. A proper pho (beef or chicken broth simmered 6+ hours, rice noodles, herb plate, chilli) served at a Vietnamese family restaurant in Marzahn is a genuinely different experience from a trendy pho concept in Mitte.

Bánh Mì

Bánh mì (Vietnamese baguette sandwich — crispy French bread, various fillings including pâté, cold cuts, pickled vegetables, fresh chilli and coriander) is one of the great street food bargains in Germany — typically €3–6, better quality than sandwiches at twice the price in similar settings. The bread quality (properly crispy-light French baguette style) is the distinguishing factor; shops using industrial bread produce a noticeably inferior result. Berlin has several excellent bánh mì specialists.

Bún bò Huế and Other Regional Dishes

Beyond pho, quality Vietnamese restaurants serve bún bò Huế (spicy beef and pork lemongrass noodle soup from Hue — richer and more complex than pho), cơm tấm (broken rice with grilled pork and egg), and gỏi cuốn (fresh spring rolls with shrimp, vermicelli, and herbs, served cold with peanut dipping sauce). These dishes are less well-known to non-Vietnamese diners but highly worthwhile and available at proper Vietnamese restaurants.
