Most Chinese high school graduates cannot directly apply to German universities — their Gaokao certificate doesn't count as a recognized university entrance qualification (Hochschulzugangsberechtigung). The solution is Studienkolleg: a one-year preparatory course (Vorbereitungskurs) that ends with the Feststellungsprüfung (FSP), an exam that qualifies you for university admission.
Do You Need a Studienkolleg?
You need it if:
- You have a Chinese high school diploma (Gaokao) and no further higher education qualifications
- You've started but not completed a Chinese university degree
You don't need it if:
- You've completed two or more years of a Chinese university degree in the same or related field (applies at most German universities)
- You have a degree from an internationally recognized university
Use the uni-assist database (uni-assist.de) to check your specific situation. Rules vary by German state and university.
Course Types
Studienkolleg courses (Kurse) are divided by intended study field:
- T-Kurs: for engineering, mathematics, computer science, natural sciences
- W-Kurs: for business, economics, social sciences
- M-Kurs: for medicine and pharmacy (most competitive)
- G-Kurs: for humanities and social sciences
- S-Kurs: for language and arts programs
Choose the course type that matches your intended university major. You cannot take the FSP for T-Kurs and then apply to a business degree.
Where to Study
Germany has state-run Studienkollegs attached to universities and private Studienkollegs. State schools are cheaper (often free or €200 to €500 tuition) but competitive. Private schools charge €3,000 to €8,000 but have higher acceptance rates and sometimes more English instruction during the preparation phase. Well-known options: Studienkolleg TU Berlin, Studienkolleg Universität Köln, Studienwerk Berlin (private).
Language Requirements
All German state Studienkollegs require B2 German minimum for admission. Many require C1 in practice. The preparation for the FSP itself is taught in German. Private Studienkollegs may accept B1 and teach intensively. Plan at least two years of serious German study before attempting Studienkolleg if starting from zero.
The Feststellungsprüfung (FSP)
The FSP covers German language plus two to three subjects relevant to your course type (e.g., mathematics and physics for T-Kurs). Passing is required for most universities to accept your application. Scores also factor into competitive course admissions alongside GPA and other criteria. You can retake the FSP once if you fail. After two failures, you must leave the Studienkolleg system.
Timeline
Typical path from China: learn German to B2 (18 to 24 months), apply for Studienkolleg while doing APS (4 to 8 weeks for APS), complete one year of Studienkolleg, pass FSP, apply to university. From high school graduation to university enrollment: approximately three to four years total.
