Germany takes cycling seriously as infrastructure, not just recreation. Cities like Münster, Freiburg, and Bremen consistently rank among Europe’s most cycle-friendly. Even in Berlin, over 15% of all trips happen by bike. Understanding the rules and facilities turns cycling from intimidating to efficient.
Cycling Infrastructure Types
Germany uses several types of cycling infrastructure. Radweg: a dedicated bike path, separated from traffic, often alongside a road. Cycling on the pavement (Gehweg) is only allowed if marked “Fahrrad frei.” Schutzstreifen: a marked-off strip on the road edge — you may cycle there, cars may enter only when necessary. Fahrradstraße: a road reserved for cyclists where cars are only guests. In Fahrradstraßen, cyclists may use the full lane and ride side by side.
Rules You Must Follow
Lights front and rear are legally required after dark — riding without them is a €25 fine. Helmets are not mandatory for adults but recommended. Cycling on the wrong side of a bike lane (Geisterfahrer) is a €25 fine. Running a red light: €60–180. Cycling while drunk (over 0.3 promille with an accident, or over 1.6 promille anytime) carries the same consequences as drink driving. Earphones in both ears are prohibited.
Taking Your Bike on Public Transport
Bikes are allowed on regional trains (RE, RB), S-Bahn, and some U-Bahn with a Fahrradticket (€1.50–6/day depending on city). No bikes on ICE high-speed trains. Reservation required for bike space on IC/EC trains and some regional trains on busy routes — book through the DB app when planning a longer trip. Bikes fold flat (Klapprad) are free on most urban public transport without a ticket.
Buying and Securing a Bike
A city bike costs €300–700 new, €100–300 used. E-bikes run €1,500–3,500. Bike theft is rampant in German cities: Berlin loses around 30,000 bikes per year. A quality lock (Kryptonite Evolution or Abus Granit) costs €60–120 and is essential. Lock both the frame and wheel to a fixed object. A second cable lock through the wheels helps.
