Poland from Germany: Kraków, Warsaw, and the Wrocław Alternative

Poland is one of Europe’s most underrated travel destinations from Germany — affordable, historically fascinating, and geographically close (Wrocław is 2.5 hours from Berlin by direct train). Here is how to make the trip work.

Getting There

Berlin to Warsaw: 5.5 hours by direct EC train (several daily). Book via PKP Intercity (Polish rail) or Deutsche Bahn. Berlin to Wrocław: 2.5 hours direct. Frankfurt/Munich to Kraków: fly (Ryanair/Wizz Air, 2 hours) or train via Vienna (8+ hours). Budget airlines are the practical choice for southern Poland from western/southern Germany.

Kraków

Kraków is one of Europe’s best-preserved medieval cities — its Rynek Główny (main market square) is the largest medieval market square in Europe. The Wawel Castle and Cathedral sit on a hill overlooking the city; the Jewish district of Kazimierz has survived and been revived and is home to excellent restaurants. Auschwitz-Birkenau is 80km away (day trip by minibus from the town centre; book in advance and allow the full day — this is not a tourist attraction but a historical responsibility). Prices are significantly lower than Western Europe — a full dinner with drinks runs €15–25 per person.

Warsaw

Warsaw was 85% destroyed during World War II and rebuilt — the result is a city with a reconstructed old town (UNESCO-listed despite being rebuilt) and a jarring but historically important Stalinist architecture layer from the 1950s. The Warsaw Uprising Museum is one of the most emotionally powerful museums in Europe. Food scene: significant improvement over the past decade, now with excellent contemporary Polish cuisine alongside international options.

Wrocław

Wrocław (formerly Breslau, German until 1945) is the most architecturally Germanic of Polish cities and has developed a vibrant independent food and culture scene. Excellent base for exploring Lower Silesia. The gnome (krasnal) trail — there are over 600 small gnome statues hidden around the city — is charming and a good way to explore on foot.
