## Waterproof-Breathable Membranes: How Gore-Tex Works
Gore-Tex’s core is an expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE) membrane. The ePTFE membrane has approximately 1.4 billion micropores per square centimeter, with pore diameters of ~0.2 microns — 700× larger than a water vapor molecule (allowing moisture vapor to pass through) and 20,000× smaller than the smallest raindrop (blocking liquid water). This scale differential achieves the simultaneous goals of waterproofing and breathability.
Major competitors: eVent (no fabric laminate, better breathability), Pertex Shield+, Polartec Neoshell (soft shell waterproofing), domestic Toray 20K/20K (equivalent performance at 30-50% lower cost).
Breathability metric (MVTR): ≥10,000g/m²/24h is the baseline; top products reach 20,000-30,000g/m²/24h. Waterproofing (Hydrostatic Head): ≥20,000mm for everyday rain/snow; ≥30,000mm for heavy precipitation environments.
## Insulation Fill Comparison
**Down**: insulation efficiency measured in fill power; 700FP is high quality; 800FP+ is premium. Advantages: best insulation-to-weight ratio, excellent compressibility. Disadvantages: almost completely fails when wet, requiring waterproof shell fabric. RDS (Responsible Down Standard) is the ethical sourcing certification.
**Primaloft Gold**: the synthetic insulation benchmark — wet insulation 6× that of traditional cotton, retaining 90% of dry performance; machine washable; slightly heavier than equivalent-warmth down. Suited for rainy environments or high-perspiration activity.
**Aerogel**: aerospace-grade thermal insulation with thermal conductivity ~0.015 W/m·K (far below still air’s 0.025), now applied in Oros brand outdoor clothing and some Salomon hiking boots. Ultra-thin (2-3mm can match traditional down jacket insulation), but currently high cost and stiffer hand feel.
