Salzburg is 90 minutes from Munich by direct train — close enough for a day trip, rich enough for a weekend. Mozart’s birthplace, the Fortress Hohensalzburg, the Baroque old town, and the Sound of Music filming locations make it one of Austria’s most compact and rewardable day trips from Germany.
Getting There
Direct trains from Munich Hauptbahnhof to Salzburg Hauptbahnhof run every 30–60 minutes; the journey is 1h30–1h45. Book via DB or ÖBB; the Deutschlandticket is not valid beyond the German border, but the fare is reasonable (€20–35 return depending on how far in advance you book). Arrive at Salzburg Hauptbahnhof and walk to the old town (Altstadt) in 15 minutes or take the bus.
The Old Town
Salzburg’s Altstadt is compact and walkable — the Residenzplatz and the Cathedral, the Domplatz, Getreidegasse (narrow shopping street with Mozart’s birthplace at No. 9), and the Mirabell Palace and Gardens are all within 20 minutes walk of each other. The Fortress Hohensalzburg (above the old town, accessible by funicular or a steep walk) provides the defining aerial view of the city. The panorama of the fortress, the Salzach River, and the Alps beyond is one of Austria’s finest urban views.
Food and Coffee
Salzburg’s café culture is Viennese in character — serious coffee (Melange — Austrian version of cappuccino), Sachertorte, and Mozartkugeln (marzipan-chocolate sweets named for Mozart). Café Tomaselli (founded 1700) and Café Bazar (Art Nouveau, overlooking the Salzach) are the classic options. For food, Kasnocken (Austrian cheese noodles with chives) and Tafelspitz (boiled beef with root vegetables) are the regional classics worth ordering over the ubiquitous schnitzel.
Day Trip vs. Overnight
A day trip covers the essentials. Staying overnight allows: evening concert at the Mozarteum or Salzburg Festival performances (if visiting in July–August), the Hellbrunn Palace and its trick fountains (8km south, requires extra time), and daytripping into the Salzkammergut lake district. Summer festival season (July–August) brings Salzburg’s best classical music but also its highest prices.
