Munich Dessert Shops and Cake Cafés Worth Visiting

Munich has a strong café and pastry culture rooted in its Bavarian identity but increasingly shaped by international influences. Here are the spots worth making time for.

Traditional Bavarian Cafés

The Café Luitpold on Brienner Straße has operated since 1888 and remains one of Munich’s grandest traditional cafés — a large, ornate space with excellent cakes including their signature Baumkuchen (layered tree cake). Café Frischhut near the Viktualienmarkt is famous for its Schmalznudeln (fried dough pastries), only available in the morning. These traditional spots close early and are not designed for long stays with laptops.

Japanese Patisserie Influence

Several Munich patisseries have adopted the precise, architectural style of Japanese pastry making — delicate entremets, yuzu-flavoured creations, and matcha desserts. This style values visual perfection and subtle flavours over the richness of traditional German cakes. Prices are higher (€6–12 per piece) but portions are smaller and more refined.

Milchreis and Porridge

A Munich food trend that has persisted: Milchreis (sweet rice pudding) cafés, which serve rice pudding with elaborate toppings — caramelised fruits, nut butters, granola. These are often found in the health-conscious districts of Schwabing and Maxvorstadt. Low in pretension, good value, popular with students.

Ice Cream

Munich has excellent Italian gelato (reflecting the large Italian community and historical trade connections with Italy). Gelateria dal Cuore and several family-run Italian gelaterias in the Glockenbachviertel use fresh seasonal ingredients. Expect to pay €1.50–2.50 per scoop at quality shops.

Christmas Market Sweets

Munich’s Christkindlmarkt at Marienplatz (late November to Christmas Eve) has the most concentrated density of traditional Bavarian sweets in the country: Lebkuchen (gingerbread), Gebrannte Mandeln (candied almonds), Glühwein, and Schmalznudeln. Worth visiting even if you visit Munich at no other time of year.
