Kraków is consistently rated among Europe’s most beautiful cities — a medieval city with one of Europe’s largest and best-preserved old town squares, a Jewish quarter with living culture, and salt mines and concentration camp memorials for those seeking historical depth. It is also remarkably affordable by German standards.
Getting There
Flights from Berlin, Frankfurt, or Munich to Kraków take 1–2 hours. Ryanair, Wizz Air, and LOT Polish Airlines all serve the route affordably. By train, Berlin to Kraków takes 8–9 hours (one change, usually Warsaw) — a long day but perfectly feasible overnight. By car, Berlin to Kraków is 5.5 hours. For a 3–4 day trip, flying is the practical choice.
The Old Town (Stare Miasto)
The UNESCO-listed Old Town is navigable on foot in a day but rewards multiple days. The Main Market Square (Rynek Główny) is the largest medieval market square in Europe — far more alive than it sounds on paper. The Wawel Cathedral and Castle complex above the Vistula is Poland’s symbolic national monument. St. Mary’s Basilica (Gothic, 14th century) has an extraordinary blue interior with gilded altarpiece. Kazimierz, the historic Jewish quarter, has been revived as Kraków’s creative and restaurant district.
Cost
Kraków is significantly cheaper than Germany. A restaurant meal at a quality sit-down establishment runs PLN 40–80 (€9–18). Beer PLN 10–15 (€2.50–3.50). Accommodation in a 3-star hotel or excellent hostel: €25–60 per night. Polish food (żurek — sourdough rye soup, pierogi — dumplings, bigos — hunter’s stew) at a traditional milk bar (bar mleczny) costs under €5.
Day Trips
Wieliczka Salt Mine (14km from Kraków, 2 hours underground with guided tour, UNESCO-listed) is remarkable — carved chapels, sculptures, and an underground lake 135 metres below ground. Auschwitz-Birkenau (75km from Kraków) is a 3–4 hour guided visit and one of the most significant historical sites in Europe — sobering and essential for understanding 20th century history.
