The German Work Culture: What Surprises Most Newcomers

German work culture has specific characteristics that differ enough from both the UK/US and East Asian models to warrant careful attention. Understanding them early prevents misread signals and missed norms.

Work-Life Separation

Germans maintain clear boundaries between work and personal life. Calling a colleague on their mobile outside working hours is generally considered intrusive unless explicitly agreed otherwise. After-work socialising with colleagues is less common than in Anglo-Saxon or East Asian work cultures — German colleagues may be warm during the day but have no expectation or interest in dinner after work. This is not unfriendliness; it reflects a different philosophy about the appropriate scope of work relationships.

Title and Formality

The Sie/du distinction (formal vs. informal “you”) applies in professional settings. Unless explicitly invited to use du, default to Sie and last name (Herr/Frau + last name). The invitation to use du (das “Du” anbieten) is a small but meaningful social gesture. In tech companies and startups, du is often the default; in law firms, banks, and public institutions, Sie persists. Match your formality level to your specific environment.

Meetings and Decisions

German meetings tend to have clear agendas and to reach decisions by consensus after thorough discussion. The discussion phase may seem longer than efficient to people from faster-moving cultures, but decisions made this way tend to stick — German colleagues who have been heard in the decision process generally commit to implementation. Improvising or changing decisions after a meeting is poorly received.

Feedback Culture

Critical feedback is given directly and often publicly in team settings. A German colleague who says “this report has serious problems with the methodology” is making a professional observation, not a personal attack. This takes time to adapt to, but it also means that German colleagues say what they actually think rather than giving politically safe positive feedback that masks real concerns.
