German Waste Separation: Recycling Rules That Actually Matter

Müll trennen (waste separation) is taken seriously in Germany — neighbors notice, and violations can result in warnings or increased garbage fees. Understanding the system takes 30 minutes; following it becomes automatic. Here’s what you actually need to know.

The Core Containers

Restmüll (Restmülltonne, usually gray or black): everything that doesn’t go in other bins. Residual waste, non-recyclable plastics, ceramics, hygiene products, food-contaminated packaging. Collected weekly or bi-weekly depending on building and city.

Gelber Sack / Gelbe Tonne (yellow): packaging with the Grüner Punkt (green dot) or DER GRÜNE PUNKT symbol. Plastic packaging, tin cans, aluminum, composite packaging (Tetrapaks). Does NOT include glass, paper, or actual food waste.

Papiertonne (blue): paper and cardboard. Newspapers, cardboard boxes (broken flat), books, magazines. Not for: waxed or plastic-coated cardboard, pizza boxes with heavy grease (controversial but usually Restmüll in Germany).

Biotonne (brown): food waste. Raw and cooked food, coffee grounds, eggshells, fruit and vegetable scraps, small plant cuttings. Not available in all buildings — check with your Hausverwaltung (building management).

Glass: separate by color (white/clear = Weißglas, brown = Braunglas, green = Grünglas) at communal Glascontainer (glass collection points). Not collected at home. Deposit glass (Pfand) goes to the Pfandautomat, not the glass bin.

What Confuses People Most

Plastic bags: into Gelber Sack, even without content. Styrofoam: Gelber Sack if it was packaging; Restmüll otherwise. Plastic film (Plastikfolie): Gelber Sack. Old electronics: not in any household bin — take to the Wertstoffhof (recycling center) or designated electronics collection. Batteries: not in any bin — return to supermarkets or drug stores (required by German law).

Bulky Waste (Sperrmüll)

Old furniture, mattresses, large items: request Sperrmüll collection from your Entsorgungsbetrieb (waste management company). Each address gets one or two free collections per year in most cities. Check your local Wertstoffhof for drop-off as an alternative.

City-Specific Apps

Most German cities have waste sorting apps: “Abfall-App” from your city’s Entsorgungsbetrieb tells you collection days and the correct bin for specific items. Input your address and get a personalized collection calendar. Ask AI to help you interpret the app’s information if it’s only in German.
