German University Grades Explained: Why 1.0 is the Best and 4.0 is a Pass

2025年8月11日 2点热度 0人点赞 0条评论
Language: 🇨🇳 中文版 🇬🇧 English

German university grades run on a 1 to 5 scale, which is the reverse of what most international students expect. A 1.0 is the highest possible grade; 5.0 is a fail. This inverted logic causes real confusion at first and matters for graduate school applications and German job applications where GPA equivalents come up.

The Scale

  • 1.0 – 1.5: Sehr gut (very good) — exceptional
  • 1.6 – 2.5: Gut (good) — above average
  • 2.6 – 3.5: Befriedigend (satisfactory) — average
  • 3.6 – 4.0: Ausreichend (sufficient) — passing, below average
  • 4.1 – 5.0: Nicht bestanden / Mangelhaft (fail)

Some universities use a modified Bavarian formula when calculating cumulative GPA (Gesamtnote) that compresses grades to account for different examination difficulty. Always clarify which formula your university uses.

What Grades Mean in Practice

A 1.0 in Germany is extremely rare. Most students with strong performance graduate between 1.5 and 2.5. The average German university student graduates with around 2.4 to 2.8. A 3.5 is passing but signals struggle; in competitive job applications, anything above 3.0 puts you at a disadvantage compared to candidates with 2.x grades.

Grade Conversion for US/UK Students

If your transcript is from a US university, the rough conversion used by most German institutions:

  • US A (4.0 GPA) ≈ German 1.0–1.3
  • US B (3.0 GPA) ≈ German 2.0–2.5
  • US C (2.0 GPA) ≈ German 3.0–3.5

UK 2:1 (upper second class) roughly corresponds to a German 2.0 to 2.5. Use anabin.kmk.org for the official German Recognition Information System to check specific country equivalents.

Individual Course Grades vs. Final Degree Grade

Each module (Modul) has its own grade, listed on your Transcript of Records. Your Abschlussnote (final degree grade) is a weighted average calculated by the university's examination office (Prüfungsamt), with major thesis, seminar, and examination grades weighted by credit points (ECTS).

What German Employers Think

German employers ask for your Abschlussnote on job applications. In competitive fields (consulting, finance, large tech), applications from candidates with grades above 2.5 are filtered out at the first stage by some companies. This is industry-specific and not universal. Engineering, natural sciences, and vocational fields are more merit-based and less grade-focused than consulting or banking recruitment.

Can You Retake Exams?

German universities allow exam retakes (Wiederholungsprüfung) typically twice. After three failures in one module, you're usually withdrawn from the degree (Exmatrikulation). The rules vary by university and state. Check your Prüfungsordnung (examination regulations) for your specific program.
