German pharmacies (Apotheken) are distinct from the supermarket health aisles you may be used to. Pharmacists here have full graduate-level pharmacy training and will give you substantive medical advice — not just point you to a shelf. Knowing how to use an Apotheke saves you unnecessary GP visits for common conditions.
Prescription Drugs (Rezeptpflichtige Arzneimittel)
Prescription drugs require a paper or electronic prescription (Rezept) from a licensed doctor. Red prescriptions (rotes Rezept) are for controlled substances and are valid only on the day of issue. Green prescriptions (grünes Rezept) are valid for 3 months. Most statutory health insurance (GKV) drugs come with a co-payment (Zuzahlung) of €5–10 per drug, regardless of the drug's retail price.
Over-the-Counter Medications (OTC)
Many medications that require prescriptions in other countries are available OTC in Germany — higher-dose ibuprofen (400–800mg), codeine-containing cough syrups, and several antifungals. Tell the pharmacist your symptoms and they will suggest the appropriate OTC option. German pharmacists can also advise when something requires a doctor visit rather than self-treatment.
The Apotheke as First Point of Contact
For minor wounds, skin conditions, colds, digestive issues, and mild infections: ask at the Apotheke first. It is faster than a GP appointment (no waiting list) and the advice is generally sound. If the pharmacist thinks you need a doctor, they will tell you directly.
Online Pharmacies
Online pharmacies (DocMorris, Shop Apotheke, Redcare) are legal in Germany for OTC and non-controlled prescription drugs. Prices are often 10–30% cheaper than walk-in pharmacies. Delivery is typically 1–3 days. For OTC drugs you buy regularly, this is worth comparing. For acute needs, walk-in is faster.
Night and Emergency Pharmacies
German pharmacies are legally required to coordinate 24-hour coverage in every area. On your pharmacy's door, you will find a notice listing the nearest Notdienstapotheke (emergency pharmacy) that is currently open outside hours. The bundesweite Apothekennotdienst can also be found via aponet.de or by calling 0800 00 22 833.
