German master's programs are designed as continuations, not pivots. The admissions regulations (Zulassungsordnung) for each program list prerequisite subject areas that applicants must cover before enrollment. If your undergraduate degree is in a different field, you need to address those gaps directly.
How to Find Your Gaps
Download the Prüfungsordnung or Zulassungsordnung for the program — a PDF available on the program's official page, not just the brochure. Look for a section titled "Zulassungsvoraussetzungen" or "Eingangsvoraussetzungen." This lists required subject areas, sometimes specific modules and credit hours.
Map your own transcript against that list. For each gap, check whether:
- An online course (Coursera, edX) with a certificate covers it
- A bridge program or Propädeutikum exists at that university
- The requirement is hard (application rejected without it) or advisory (committee weighs it)
What to Write in Your Motivationsschreiben
Don't hide the subject change — admissions committees notice transcript mismatches immediately. Address it in the first paragraph: name the gap, explain what you have done to close it, and make a clear case for what your unusual background contributes that the typical applicant does not bring.
A biologist applying to bioinformatics has a compelling story. A history graduate applying to mechanical engineering does not, unless they have completed 20+ ECTS of relevant coursework independently.
Programs That Are Explicitly Open to Cross-Disciplinary Applicants
Data science, digital humanities, and several applied linguistics programs at German universities explicitly welcome cross-disciplinary candidates and say so in their Zulassungsordnung. Look for the phrase "einschlägiges Bachelorstudium" (relevant bachelor's degree) rather than "Bachelorstudium in [specific field]." The former gives you room to argue relevance; the latter does not.
Practical Next Step
Email the program's admissions office (Studienberatung) before applying. Describe your background in one paragraph and ask directly whether your transcript meets the Zugangsvoraussetzungen. German academic staff will tell you plainly. A five-minute email saves you a €75 Uni-Assist fee on an application you would not have passed.
