The Schwarzwald (Black Forest) in Baden-Württemberg is Germany’s most famous hiking region — 6,000km of marked trails across dense spruce and fir forest, glacial lakes, and traditional farmhouse landscapes. Here is what you need to know before planning a trip.
The Landscape and Regions
The Black Forest divides into Northern (lighter landscape, wine villages, proximity to Karlsruhe and Strasbourg), Middle (most popular for day trips from Freiburg, home to Titisee and Feldberg), and Southern (wilder, quieter, longer routes, Swiss border proximity). The Feldberg is the highest peak at 1,493m — above the treeline, views across to the Swiss Alps on clear days, accessible by a short cable car, though the marked hiking routes from Feldberg village are rewarding too. The Titisee and Schluchsee lakes are glacially formed and spectacularly set but heavily touristed in summer.
The Best Routes
The Westweg (Western Way): 285km, Pforzheim to Basel, 12 stages, considered Germany’s most beautiful long-distance trail. Crossing the full length of the Black Forest north to south, it passes the Hornisgrinde (Black Forest’s second-highest peak), the Mummelsee lake, and multiple traditional farmhouse landscapes. Most hikers complete it in 12–14 days, using hiker hostels (Wanderherbergen) or farm accommodation. For day hikes from Freiburg: the Schauinsland (1,284m, cable car access from Horben, excellent ridge walking) and the Wiedener Eck area. From Baden-Baden: the Badener Höhe ridge and the Merkur mountain (funicular access, views over Strasbourg and the Rhine valley).
Season and Conditions
Summer (June–August): best weather, all routes accessible, busiest. Autumn (September–October): arguably the finest season — mild temperatures, fewer crowds, the beech and oak forest colours. Winter: the Feldberg and higher elevations are cross-country and downhill ski areas; lower routes remain walkable but can be icy. Spring (April–May): mud season, some higher-elevation routes still snowy. The Schwarzwald Tourismus website has trail condition updates throughout the year.
Practical Logistics
Freiburg im Breisgau is the main gateway city — excellent university city, trainable from Stuttgart (1h), Basel (45min), and Frankfurt (2h). Buses connect Freiburg to trailheads throughout the southern and middle Black Forest. For the Westweg, the Bahn accommodation booking service lists certified Wanderherbergen along the route. The Outdooractive and Komoot apps both have excellent Black Forest content with offline maps.
