Germany reports over 300,000 bicycle thefts per year, with actual numbers higher due to unreported cases. Cities like Berlin, Cologne, and Hamburg have particularly high rates. A bike worth €400 can vanish in under 60 seconds with angle grinder if secured only by a thin cable lock. The solution isn't zero theft risk — it's raising the time and effort cost enough that thieves move to easier targets.
Lock Quality
The gold standard: a SOLD SECURE Gold-rated or ART 3-4 rated U-lock or chain lock. These ratings mean the lock resists attack for several minutes with power tools. Look for the rating printed on the lock itself.
- Kryptonite New York or Evolution U-lock: ART 2-3, widely available at Saturn, MediaMarkt, and bike shops. €50 to €100.
- Abus Granit series: ART 3-4, SOLD SECURE Gold. Available at ABUS dealers and Amazon. €80 to €150.
- Kryptonite New York chain: heavy, awkward, and very effective for a second lock. €80 to €140.
The two-lock rule: use two different types of locks. A thief prepared to defeat one type is rarely carrying the tools for the other. A U-lock through the frame and rear wheel plus a chain through the front wheel and a fixed object covers 90% of casual theft attempts.
Where to Lock It
Always lock to an immovable fixed object — a bike rack, metal railing, or lamp post anchored to concrete. Avoid:
- Trees (branches can be sawn through)
- Thin fence posts (can be lifted out)
- The bike frame only, not attached to anything fixed (a thief can just carry the whole bike away)
Keep the lock off the ground — a ground-resting lock can be attacked with a hammer strike. Thread it through the frame triangle and rear wheel, with the keyhole facing down (harder to manipulate).
Bike Registration
Register your bike frame number (Rahmennummer, found stamped under the bottom bracket) at fahrradpass.de or at your local police station. This increases recovery chances if stolen. Some German cities have municipal registration programs. When buying a used bike, check the frame number against the national stolen bike database (Fahrradregister.de or similar) before paying.
Insurance Options
Standard household contents insurance (Hausratversicherung) may include bicycle theft as an add-on (Fahrradklausel) for an additional €30 to €80 per year — worth it for bikes over €500. Check whether your policy covers theft "from outside" (outdoor lock-up) or only indoor storage. Many policies cover theft only between 6am and 10pm, excluding overnight periods. Getsafe and some digital providers offer standalone bike insurance from around €5/month.
