Grant writing is one of the most high-stakes writing tasks in academia. AI assistance is real, but the failure modes are specific and costly. Here’s where the line is.
Where AI Genuinely Helps
Specific aims drafting: describe your project to Claude, including the problem, your approach, preliminary data, and significance. Ask it to draft a Specific Aims page structure. Compare this draft to your own attempt — it often reveals whether your narrative is too technical for non-specialist reviewers, whether the clinical/societal impact is clear, and whether the logical sequence of aims makes sense.
Lay summary writing: most grants require a non-technical summary for public communication. This is a specific writing mode (jargon-free, impact-focused) that Claude handles well. Provide the technical version and ask for a 200-word lay translation.
Strengthening the “Innovation” and “Significance” sections: these sections require making arguments about why your work matters. Ask Claude: “I’m writing a DFG application for research on X. Generate 5 arguments for why this work is significant that I may not have considered.” Reviewers these sections differently than the technical approach sections.
Where AI Hurts You
Using AI to write technical sections requires the AI to understand your experimental design — it doesn’t. Any technical inaccuracy in a grant is devastating; reviewers catch them, and they flag your application as poorly prepared. Write technical sections yourself. Use AI only for structural and rhetorical support.
Generic AI prose fails in grant writing because grants require specific voice and credibility claims (“Our group has demonstrated…”, “Preliminary data from our lab show…”). Generic prose can’t make these claims credibly because it doesn’t know your publication history or preliminary data.
Budget Justification
Budget justification is formulaic and AI handles it well. Provide the budget line items and ask Claude to write the justification text in the style of standard DFG/NIH/ERC grant language. This is mechanical writing where AI saves real time without risk.
