Applying for a German student visa requires gathering the right documents in the right format — missing even one item means rescheduling your consulate appointment. Start at least three months before your planned departure.
Required Documents
Bring your valid passport (expires at least six months after your stay), the completed visa application form from the consulate website, your university admission letter (Zulassungsbescheid), two recent biometric photos, and proof of finances. Chinese graduates from most universities need an APS certificate; check the APS website to confirm your institution is listed.
The Blocked Account (Sperrkonto)
Germany requires proof of roughly €11,208 per year (2025). Open a Sperrkonto at Fintiba, Coracle, or Deutsche Bank at least six weeks before your appointment. The funds are frozen and released monthly (about €934). You need the account confirmation letter for your visa file.
Health Insurance
Travel insurance is not accepted. For the pre-enrollment gap, use an approved plan like Mawista or Care Concept. Once enrolled, join a German public insurer (TK, AOK, Barmer — around €120/month for students).
After Arrival
The visa gives you three months to complete your Anmeldung, university enrollment, public health insurance sign-up, and residence permit application at the Ausländerbehörde. Budget 3–4 months total from opening your blocked account to holding your visa in hand.
