Claude and ChatGPT are both powerful general-purpose AI assistants, but they have meaningfully different strengths. After extensive use of both in 2024–2025, here is an honest breakdown.
Long Document Analysis
Claude’s context window (200K tokens in Claude 3.5 Sonnet and above) is large enough to process an entire book, a full academic paper, or a long legal contract in a single conversation. Ask it to summarise, find contradictions, extract all dates and obligations, or compare sections. ChatGPT Plus has improved its context handling but still lags behind for very long documents.
Nuanced Writing
Claude tends to produce more naturalistic prose with fewer clichés and AI-sounding phrasings than ChatGPT. For drafting emails, reports, articles, or formal letters, Claude’s output typically requires less editing. It also follows style instructions (be direct, use short sentences, avoid passive voice) more reliably.
Code
Both handle common programming tasks well. Claude Sonnet tends to write cleaner, better-commented code for complex tasks; ChatGPT is sometimes faster for quick one-liners. For Claude Code specifically (Claude’s CLI tool), Claude can navigate and modify entire codebases directly.
Where ChatGPT Still Leads
ChatGPT with plugins (DALL-E image generation, web browsing, code interpreter/data analysis) has a broader immediate toolset. GPT-4o’s voice mode is also more mature than Claude’s. For creative image generation requests, ChatGPT is still the better choice.
Practical Recommendation
Use Claude as your primary assistant for writing, analysis, research, and coding. Switch to ChatGPT when you need image generation or its specific plugins. Both are worth €20/month at their Pro tiers if you use AI regularly.
