Getting the Best Results from ChatGPT: Advanced User Techniques

Most ChatGPT users interact with it as if it were a search engine — asking single questions and accepting first responses. Advanced users treat it differently. Here are the techniques that separate productive AI users from average ones.

Iterative Refinement

The first response is rarely optimal. After any AI response, ask follow-up refinement questions rather than starting over: “Make this more concise.” “This is too formal — make it conversational.” “The third paragraph misses the key point — revise it to emphasise [specific point].” Treating AI interaction as a conversation that improves iteratively produces dramatically better outputs than accepting first drafts. The context built in the conversation improves each subsequent response.

Asking for Multiple Options

“Give me three different approaches to this, with the trade-offs of each.” “Write two versions of this email — one formal, one direct.” “Suggest five different angles for this article introduction.” Asking for multiple options externalises the evaluation step — you choose rather than accept. This is especially valuable for writing, where the first framing is rarely the best one.

Persona and Role Assignment

“You are a CFO reviewing this business plan. What are the financial weaknesses?” “You are a hostile reviewer of this argument. What are its weaknesses?” Assigning a specific role changes the frame through which the AI evaluates content, producing more targeted and often more useful critiques than “what do you think of this?”

Structured Output Requests

“Give me the output in a table with columns: Task, Owner, Deadline, Priority.” “Format your response as a numbered list with each item under 50 words.” “Output the analysis as JSON with keys: strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, threats.” Structured output is immediately usable, easier to scan, and prevents the verbose paragraphs that AI tends to generate when format is unspecified.

Memory Across a Session

Within a conversation session, ChatGPT remembers the context. Use this: “Based on the requirements we discussed earlier, now write the implementation.” Reference earlier parts of the conversation explicitly when relevant — this produces more contextually consistent responses than starting fresh each time.
