Best Places in Berlin – Which Neighborhood Suits You Best?

Flat in Berlin MitteBerlin is a city of contrasts, and choosing where to live depends entirely on what you're looking for.

Are you ready to party until dawn, or do you prefer a quiet neighborhood where you can enjoy an evening stroll without tripping over drunk tourists?

To help you decide, here's a guide to Berlin's best neighborhoods for different lifestyles. Keep in mind that both you and the city are changing fast – the neighborhood you love today might annoy you tomorrow.

Best Place for Families to Live in Berlin – Prenzlauer Berg

Weinbergspark Berlin

Right after the Berlin Wall fell, Prenzlauer Berg was not where you wanted to live. Houses were crumbling, some "Hinterhäuser" (back buildings) had no electricity, you shared bathrooms with several other tenants, and heating was a disaster.

That's why initially, young students, leftists, and squatters made Prenzlauer Berg their playground. But as buildings were renovated, many could no longer afford the rent, and people from all over the world discovered the charm of Prenzlauer Berg.

This gentrification happened over about 20 years. Today, Prenzlauer Berg is synonymous with young families lounging in parks and sipping soy chai lattes from to-go cups.

While these stereotypes may hold some truth, Prenzlauer Berg is a fantastic place for families and singles who enjoy the neighborhood's tranquility and flair. There are countless options for grabbing a coffee, sunbathing in one of the parks, or just going for a stroll.

Rents have risen in recent years, but compared to other European capitals, Prenzlauer Berg is still affordable, and you get a lot for your money.

Best Place in Berlin for Students – Friedrichshain

Berlin Friedrichshain Frankfurter TorFriedrichshain still offers the advantage of low rents and a vibrant bar and club scene.

Many Berliners compare Friedrichshain to Prenzlauer Berg 10 years ago and fear the same gentrification process will happen there.

But for now, Friedrichshain remains the best choice for students to live and party, although Kreuzberg and Neukölln have caught up a lot in recent years.

Simon-Dach Strasse is probably the busiest street in Berlin, lined with countless bars packed with young people.

Best Place in Berlin to Work and Live – Berlin Mitte

Berlin Alexanderplatz FernsehturmIf you're planning to start a career in Berlin, you should probably move to Mitte.

Most companies are located near the city center. Walking down the street, you'll inevitably encounter businesspeople on calls or startup founders working on the next big thing in one of the many cafes offering free WLAN.

Rents in Berlin Mitte are high, but apartments are relatively new and modern. Most areas are walkable, bikeable, or easily reachable by public transport. For after-work socializing, there are plenty of bars and clubs where you can meet like-minded people.

Best Place in Berlin to Stay as a Tourist – Berlin Mitte

Berlin Fernsehturm Mitte AlexanderplatzWhy would you prefer to stay in Berlin Mitte as a tourist? The answer is simple.

Most top tourist attractions are located in Berlin's Mitte district, such as Brandenburger Tor, Alexanderplatz, Nikolaiviertel, or Hausvogteiplatz, to name just a few.

Alexanderplatz is also Berlin's public transport hub, allowing you to reach any other place within the S-Bahn Ring in under 20 minutes.

Last but not least, most of Berlin's best hotels are located in Mitte.

Best Place in Berlin to Stay – Conclusion

As mentioned, it all depends on what you plan to do in Berlin. Every neighborhood has its own advantages.

Best Neighborhoods in Berlin

Architecture BerlinBerlin is divided into 12 distinct neighborhoods (Bezirke in German), each with its own vibe and feel.

Each of these neighborhoods consists of several districts (Ortsteile or Kieze in German). So if someone talks about the fantastic Prenzlauer Berg neighborhood, you can correct them and tell them that Prenzlauer Berg is actually a district of Pankow.

Sometimes you'll hear the German word "Kiez," which describes even smaller parts of a district, like the Kollwitzkiez in Prenzlauer Berg, which belongs to Pankow. Simple, right?

Whether you're a student looking to party or a family seeking a quiet neighborhood, Berlin has something for everyone.

Before we dive into more specific details about Berlin's best neighborhoods, here's a complete list of Berlin's districts:

  • Mitte
  • Pankow (including the trendy district Prenzlauer Berg)
  • Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg
  • Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf
  • Neukölln
  • Lichtenberg
  • Marzahn-Hellersdorf
  • Reinickendorf
  • Steglitz-Zehlendorf
  • Tempelhof-Schöneberg
  • Spandau
  • Treptow-Köpenick

Berlin – Mitte

Berlin Fernsehturm Mitte AlexanderplatzIn terms of recent history, Berlin's Mitte district is probably the most interesting place in all of Europe.

From Brandenburger Tor to the Reichstag building to the Jewish Memorial, there is so much history that it's almost impossible to cover it all.

But Berlin Mitte doesn't live in the past. If you're into shopping, you'll find the most expensive and exclusive brands and stores here.

The area around Hackescher Markt is known for small upscale boutiques, while Unter den Linden is home to major brands like Nivea, Microsoft, and Volkswagen.

Most of Berlin's fast-growing startups are located near Torstrasse, also known as Silicon Alley. If you want to see today's tech pioneers, be sure to grab a seat in a cafe like St. Oberholz and watch the fleet of hipsters with Apple Macbooks and iPads discussing their latest business ideas over a cup of chai latte.

Last but not least, Berlin Mitte also offers a wide variety of interesting restaurants.

If you're looking for the best steak in town, you'll find yourself at Grill Royal among movie stars and local celebrities. If you like Asian cuisine, be sure to visit Monsieur Vuong (also full of hipsters), or if you haven't made up your mind, just wander around the area between Hackescher Markt and Alexanderplatz – you'll definitely find a place to eat.

In summer, the area near Monbijou-Park is definitely our favorite. People drink from Späti (late-night convenience store) bottles and enjoy the sun.
