BeiDou Satellite Navigation System: China’s Independent Positioning Infrastructure and Industrial Applications

BeiDou Navigation Satellite System (BDS) is China’s independently developed global satellite navigation system, alongside the US GPS, Russian GLONASS, and EU Galileo as one of four global navigation systems. BDS-3 officially launched global services on July 31, 2020, with a constellation of 3 geostationary orbit (GEO) satellites, 3 inclined geosynchronous orbit (IGSO) satellites, and 24 medium Earth orbit (MEO) satellites — 30 satellites total.

## Technical Advantages and Unique Features

**Positioning accuracy**: BDS-3 achieves better-than-average accuracy in the Asia-Pacific region (enhanced by GEO and IGSO satellite coverage); measured horizontal positioning accuracy approximately 2–3 meters, comparable to GPS. Ground-based augmentation (e.g., Qianxun Location) achieves centimeter-level precision supporting drone precision flight and autonomous driving.

**Short message communication (RDSS)**: BeiDou’s unique feature — users can send short messages (up to 1,000 Chinese characters) via BeiDou terminals without cellular network coverage. This provides irreplaceable emergency communication value in oceans, deserts, mountains, and other connectivity blind spots — a differentiating capability GPS and other systems lack.

**Satellite-based augmentation**: BDS-3 provides Precise Point Positioning (PPP) service, broadcasting correction signals for decimeter-level accuracy with minute-level convergence, without requiring ground base stations, available globally.

## Industrial Applications

Transportation: mandatory BeiDou terminal installation on commercial vehicles; railway dispatch; port logistics management. Low-altitude economy: drone flight control (UTM systems based on BeiDou/GPS); eVTOL precision landing; drone ground station positioning. Precision agriculture: autonomous agricultural machinery navigation (BeiDou + RTK achieving 2 cm path accuracy); drone aerial spraying route planning. Emergency rescue: short message communication for search-and-rescue location reporting in no-cellular-coverage areas; earthquake and flood disaster on-site command.
